I work as a Multimedia Developer at Design At Work, an Advertising and Public Relations firm based in Houston, TX.

Today, I decided to graph my activities and check out what kind of art I could generate by doing nothing but going about my regular business. I used IOGraphica, a tool that logs and traces your mouse movement. The final render after 4.2 hours of a pretty busy day has really come out beautiful. All the thin lines are my mouse movements whereas the circular blocks are the time when the mouse idles. The longer it idles, the darker and bigger the circles get.

What was more interesting about this process was the consciousness it brought upon, everytime i was moving my mouse around. Typically, I work on at least 5 or 6 clients per day. Today was tad bit busier. Most of the work that I do will involve Photoshop and Dreamweaver primarily, and then its Flash or some web based apps. I try to use a lot of keyboard shortcuts as well. But between these taks, a lot of time is also spent browsing and organizing files, moving files around from one location to another.

All the big black dots represent my communication or coding time. When there are multiple people working on a same project, it is always good to clearly communicate. I personally prefer to go meet with the person for a couple of minutes and update/discuss but if that person is busy, or if I’m having a time crunch I would rather email…

So here’s a graphic for my four hours. You should try it too…. its compatible with both mac and pcs…and you’ll be making art.

I have two new exciting projects coming up.

One is for Mumbai based “Moktu”. Moktu is a food company that specializes in traditional dumplings or “momo”, their more familiar pop name. Although the origins of the food can be traced to Oriental Asian countries, nobody exactly knows who invented the momo. Meet any Nepalese, and bring-up the word momo, the words that follow next will be “Oh! I’m hungry now… I love momos.”

Moktu is based in India, but is a startup company owned by my good friend Ujjwal Shakya. The architecture and the layout of the site has not yet been discussed, but it is being manifested. I acquired the domain name as a present for Ujjwal, but it has been parked since November of 08. I have ideas of creating a great site for a great product!

The second project that I am excited about is Yatra Productions. More details about this project coming soon!

Like every web designer/developer, I started on my journey to redesign and recode my site a while back.

Like every web designer/developer, I started on my journey to redesign and recode my site a while back. Redesigning is site is no easy game. This time, i wanted to do something simple and was researching and reading books on typography! I never read books, but this time I was. I started on a design about a 400 times, redesigned it about a million times, and still wasn’t able to satisfy my thirst.

Fast forward to today when i decided to randomly visit Zeldman’s website, where he had an article about free wordpress themes. Zeldman being my god, i decided to check it out, and wallah, here I am trying out this very simple but functional theme Structure Theme by Muktu Studios and Jeff Milone.

I like this theme so far. There’s a lot of work to be done on my end to customize it, which will happen in the coming days, but I love it so far!
